Rhianna

overcast, blustery, cool, sunny periods...temps 16

A sort of turbulent day weather-wise. Woke in the middle of the night overwhelmed by things that need to be done (not including writing and editing). Tossed and turned...finally fell asleep and awoke to the wonderful aroma of coffee...God bless Michael. But it was late. 8:15 - and he had a 9:30 barber appointment. And I was meeting Rhianna (a young neighbour writing a book). So up I sprang.

Back now from meeting her. She's 20, and getting well into her novel. Very exciting. i so enjoyed meeting her. A thoughtful, kind, respectful, funny and very smart young woman. So we're going to get together once a month or so and compare notes.

It now looks as though we're going to head to London in September - which is always fun...but one more thing to add to the mix.

We've cleaned up after the visit of the kids. A funny sort of visit when the best behaved turns out to be Buttercup, the hound from Hell. Though we did find a considerable dropping in our bedroom when we returned Monday afternoon. We think it might have been BC, but, honestly, it could have been anyone and doesn't bear close examination.

We're now home...and I've decided I just need to do one or two things each day to get everything done...not bad. At 3am it seems a howling monster, at 2pm it's quite manageable.

Michael's back is almost all better!!! He's so smart...he admits he has an ache, then does his exercises...and voila. Gone.

I am SO enjoying the discussion (on the comments section) on who might play Gamache. I am noting all the suggestions...and having such fun reading them.

Hope you're enjoying the day!

I think Tom Selleck is too big! Not only too tall, but too big boned to be Gamache. And perhaps too perfect. I can't imagine him with a slight Quebec accent.
Hinds seems made to order, but there is probably some unknown out there who could own the role and make his career from it.
I would like to know what Michael thinks

Gamache-Derek Jacobi. He is a little older, granted, but just saw him live in early June and the man commands a theater. Speaks several languages and can do any accent going. Right body type and can go from mild-mannered to "cut you off at the knees in a whisper" in a millisecond.

ignore the stutter-part of his role.

Colin Firth I have been seeing as Beauvoir.

Ruth can only be played by the singularly original (mainly stage) actress, Marian Seldes. If you don't know her, you are missing out on something wonderful. Here is a cut and paste to a photo of her:

And when I say "only", I mean in my humble opinion, of course! Here is Ms. Seldes' IMDB info:

Excellent choice, Marjorie.

Marjorie for Casting Director!

Jodi, that made me laugh! I used to work in theatre and so I do have a great love of actors. And a great opposite-of-love of actors, too!

Thank you Cece for seconding my thought on Colin Firth as Inspector Beauvoir :-)
Looked up both Derek Jacobi who does rather look the part to me, but don't know of his ability.
Marian Seldes was familiar to me I just didn't recognize the name and I could go her for Ruth.
Not sure what anyone else would think of Cloris Leachman as a contender for that role, but she has played some crotchity old people.
Thanks for including us Louise, this is fun!!

Kathy,

Sure, I can see Cloris Leachman or Frances Sternhagen or Elaine Strich (and others) as Ruth, but I still feel that Seldes would be the best, imho. It is fun to think about all of the casting. I do love Colin Firth, but I don't know if I can picture him as Beauvoir.

Marjorie is spot on with her casting of Ruth! Such fun!

I thought you meant 'our' Rihanna from Barbados! Our Rihanna is such a lovely lady; I hope yours is too.

I think Beauvoir could be well done by Gary Oldman. Likeable at first, but not quite to be trusted (did I say that out loud?)

How about Kathy Bates as Clara and Loretta Devine as Myrna?

Harvey Fierstein as Gabri?

When I read about Clara, Kathy Bates is actually who I picture in my mind as her, so I definately agree with Marjorie there! When I read about Peter I always think of Peter Gallagher as him. But Gamache I cannot seem to match the image I get of him in my mind to anyone I've ever seen or met. I would love to see the people audition for Ruth's role lol.

Josephine Tewson pops into my mind when I think of Clara, but I have no thoughts for Peter yet.

After seeing the video, Ciaran Hinds gets my vote. Kathleen Turner still my choice for Ruth. Can talk like a truck driver and still be a sensitive poet.

Derek Jacobi has a long history in British theater, both Royal Shakespeare and modern, but is best known in the US for the PBS-shown "I, Claudius" in which he played the titular role. I saw him in a presentation of Shakespeare's "Tempest" which was done as reader's theater/opera/symphony. He was in a tux, played two very different parts and made you believe it was two different people. I love his work, but I am not his agent, so I will stop 'selling' him!

Kathleen Turner as Ruth? I think she might be too young-I could see her as Clara, though.

Such wonderful suggestions for the cast of Three Pines. Clara - agree with Cathy Bates and Cloris Leachman as Ruth. Beauvoir and Gamache, I'm still pondering, so important to get them right!

And this is such fun. Thanks Louise.

Any one have any thoughts about Nathan Lane for either Gabri or Olivier? Guess that is getting kind of far afield from just making suggestions for Gamache, but once you get started it is so much fun to think about putting together the whole cast ; - )

Loved your 'flying scarf' photo in your baby blue 'Bug' in this month's newsletter. MUCH safer to do it this way, instead of risking an 'Isadora Duncan' fate by doing it in reality!

Enjoy the idea of Feirstein or Lane as Gabri, and Turner/Leachman as Ruth - though I would be doubly-happy with Seldes.

The film would pivot on the choice for Gamache - what about Rémy Girard as Gamache?

I can only see Dame Judy Dench as the perfect Ruth. (Re-watch "Chocolat" for reference)

Audrey said...

Could anyone imagine William Hurt as Olivier? As I recall, he's physically the right type. I'm also in the Ciaran Hinds camp (so far) for Gamache.

whalewatcher said...

Audrey,
Judi Dench is a great suggestion! She is excellent at anything she does.

How fascinating this is! It is really opening my mind to some actors. It really is key that they embody the spirit of the characters, and not necessarily the physique, and I love that you've run with that idea as well. I think Gabri and Olivier will be such fun to play and cast.

I think, honestly, that Peter and Beauvoir might be difficult - because they're so conflicted...needs actors who can be genuinely good, but every now and then flash that duality...just a hint. Not over-play it. Just a hint of the menace that might (or might not) be there.

Thank you for giving me so much to consider...and please, keep the discussion going...I'll be taking note.
