Two squirrels and Hovey

some sun, some very light snow, mild - temps minus 5

Glorious day - as you can see! We're at Manoir Hovey - arrived yesterday, leaving tomorrow. Reading old magazines, and newspapers, napping and eating and....skating! They've created a rink in what is the perennial garden in the summer. Here we are - thought we'd better document it or no one would believe it. I'll tell you, after not skating for ten years, it's harder than it looks! Michael is doing the very difficult 'bench skate' manoeuvre. Actually, we really did skate, around and up and down. We skated frontward and we skated backward and almost, but not quite, nose downward. The Manoir has skates to lend, and heavy socks. Took us 20 minutes to put the skates on and walk out to the rink. We were exhausted.

And afterward? Well, hot chocolate in the library. Real hot chocolate...with melted chocolate and hot milk.

And, as if life couldn't get any better - Pat and Tony caught another squirrel. We feel like we've won a strange lottery, where the prize is a million squirrels. And a hot chocolate. Good enough.

No word yet on the mother dog - but will let you know when we know anything.

Must race back to doing nothing.

What a perfect place for a skating rink - such a great view down Lake Massawippi. Good for you two to skate, but it looks like you have hockey skate on and I would need the picks!! Haven't skated in over 32 years since moving to Mississippi!! Have a wonderful rest at Hovey.

Looks like tons of fun. Good for you and Michael to continue trying new things!!! Well sort of new. Someday I'd like to get to Hovey based on your lovely descriptions alone. By the way, I love your coat. You look both warm and stylish. Well done.

Ah yes, squirrels never travel alone, the little blighters...glad you caught another one as it would only lead to an entire family running amok in your walls.

Have fun at Hovey. I haven't been in years.

Years ago we caught a squirrel that was in our ceiling. It was January and very cold so we didn't want to relocate it until it got warmer. We made a large cage for it and fed it peanuts and such. Our dog was not happy at all with that arrangement, but the squirrel managed fine and eventually we let it go a few miles away with a good supply of peanuts.

Oh, those pics look so inviting! What fun, I can feel the sun, smell the fresh air, hear the skates on ice. Awesome, thanks for sharing.

Louise --

Please keep everyone posted about the well-being and future of the mother-dog Lab. You met my father, an octogenarian Calgarian, John Ballem, as a fellow panelist at Bloody Words.

And here I was wondering if you had started to give those squirrels names...

I got married at the Hovey and live just up the road. It is a lovely spot! Enjoy your weekend!

Squirrel names -- as we catch them in the cottage by Lake Massawippi, we do indeed name them. We've had Sherman, Cybil, Cyrano, Sergio and this year Susar because he ate the brioche!

I do love hearing about Hovey!! Happy New Year!
