ARC - A Trick of the Light

rain, rain - and even more rain. temps 8

Oh, yech. It's a good thing I'm not affected by the weather or I'd be in a *&$%# foul mood.

OK - the moment has finally arrived. I have Advance Readers Copies of A TRICK OF THE LIGHT to give away! And I've set some aside just for you! Four copies, to be given out two at a time.

Starting...now.

But, being a fiend, I'm going to make you earn it. The truth is, these ARCs are not only precious (as are you) - but rare. And printed by the publisher specifically and uniquely to boost interest and (that filthy word) sales. To get a buzz going before a book is published. So - they're sent to influential booksellers, reviewers, librarians, bloggers, journalists.

And, people with big mouths.

Which is where you come in.

Your job, should you win one of the ARCs (and honestly, even if you don't...please), is to tell as many people about A TRICK OF THE LIGHT as possible. Blog about it. Comment on other people's blogs. On book clubs. Write PSB, NPR, Today, OWN, Richard and Judy, magazines, your local book reviewer. Your mom. Everyone you can think of. And then some.

Tell complete strangers.

And you know why. Because the publishing business is becoming more and more difficult. And the economy is difficult. And people need to know if they spend their hard-earned and precious money on a book - then spend their hard-earned free time on it - that that book will be worth it.

A publisher can no longer publish a book and hope for the best. And an author, even a successful one, can't just sit around hoping the readers will find the new book.

With your help, we'll lead more people to Three Pines and the Gamache books - and A TRICK OF THE LIGHT specifically.

Obviously I'm making the assumption you'd be comfortable telling people that. They can use the library copy - I'm a huge fan of libraries, and certainly understand that that's how many people read books, especially series that are new to them. But we also hope many, many people will choose to buy the book too.

With your help.

Which brings us to the ARC. You can see it above, resting on the old laptop which I use to write. Behind it is the first draft of the next book...just as a cruel tease. I'm like that.

Here's the contest -

write a comment here telling me what you'll do, if you get an advance copy, to spread the word about A TRICK OF THE LIGHT. From all your wonderful comments Michael and I will choose two - not necessarily the best...but we'll narrow it down to the best, and then I'll have Michael choose at random from that pile.

Now, I know the 'comment' button can sometimes be baffling and temperamental....so if it doesn't work, just send me an email at:

contact@louisepenny.com

Whichever is easiest for you.

have fun!

I'll announce the two winners by Saturday. Good luck!

I'm going to post your contest link to my 2,000+ friends at FB (where I saw your status update and link) and tweet to my 5,000 Twitter pals with the blog link. Okay?

I will shout it from the rooftops! But the hard thing will be letting go of that most precious copy to share with others to get the good news out. But wait! I don't have to share, just tell them to BUY it! Tell the libraries to stock it! I'll post it on Goodreads! I'll post about it on Facebook! People will get so tired of hearing me talk about it, they will buy a copy just to shut me up!!
Okay, you can send me a copy now!

Louise and Michael,

If I am privileged to receive an ARC of A Trick of the Light I will be immensely thrilled!!!

I will blog about it on my blog:
http://mysteriesetc.blogspot.com/ to begin with. I will post it the review link on my Facebook Page.

I also post the reviews that I do on my blog to Goodreads, Amazon (US, Canada and UK), Chapters and Barnes and Noble.

I have read all of your books and am a huge fan.

I sincerely hope that you will choose me to review your book and praise it far and wide.

Regards, Kathy

I have been a fan from the beginning and always make a point of telling everyone to read all of your books. I promise to write a review for my own blog, also at goodreads and librarything. My own blog always goes out to fb and twitter as well. I will promote your work with my Sisters in Crime group as well as my local chapter of RWA and my critique group and any poor obliging stranger I meet along the way. I was a Realtor and I too am attempting to write my own novel so do understand marketing and the power of word of mouth. As an aside, my two friends Marylee and Anita got to meet you at Malice Domestic and I am so jealous.

Meredith from Penelope Loves Lists said...

What a wonderful opportunity - to get an early copy of the book that has actually been touched by YOU.

Wow. I honestly would be so thrilled.

Should I be so lucky to get a copy, I will post about it on Facebook and also on my blog, which has an average of 15,000 visitors/month. My blog audience, a group of Type A women whom I call "Penelopes", are huge readers who are very vocal themselves. I feel sure we could get a great buzz going.

I'd also be willing to post a review on Amazon and on my GreatReads page.

And, of course and as always, I'll continue, ARC or not, to tell everyone I know that the Gamache series is simply the best mystery series out there right now. I've already told all my friends and family and an embarrassing amount of strangers exactly that.

caryn said...

I will write a review and post it on bestsellersworld.com and mysteriesgalore.com. I will put it on Amazon and on Dorothy L.
I will put shorter blurbs on 2 yahoo reading sites.
AND, I will carry the book with me for a solid week reading it where ever I am. People know I read a lot and frequently stop me to ask what I'm reading, what it about etc.

Louise,

I chat up everyone who will listen about your books and the books of Laurie R King. Laurie gave me some of her cards, and I give them out, just as I did today when I chatted with the sales clerk about mysteries and my favorite authors. I spelled your name for her and gave her one of Laurie's cards. Proselytizing is an ongoing thing for me, and I use any opportunity, grocery lines, airline check-in lines, theater lines, to chat with people abound me about books, and my favorite authors.

If I were lucky enough to win one, and after I quit gibbering in excitement, I would definitely try to add more people to the Three Pines Fan Club. Facebook, well if it isn't bragging I know I have people who look for my reading hints. Then there are my mailing lists, some mystery oriented and some not. Twitter.... Many of my friends are "value added" in that they are booksellers or librarians who just love to talk about good books. I know this because I am one. Bottom line, I expect to love it. It is in my best interest to push books that I love.

I LOVE your books and they remind me of my childhood...growing up Anglo in a tiny Quebec Village. I will tell every one of my clients about your book and my will post it on the facebook page of the Ormstown Fair... I will be going to the fair and will tell everyone I meet at the fair about your book too!

I am a member of LibraryThing, where we in the 75 group ( We read, most of us, 75 books a year) and then we review them. The review then appears on FB and Twitter if we choose. I am a vine reviewer, and I post reviews on Amazon, and then on my blog:

http://mckaitsbooks.blogspot.com/

Also, I am a huge fan of Three Pines already, and I plan to live there when I grow up. Okay, At least keep re-reading the books.
Also, I babble on relentlessly about books I like, as well as buy copies for friends and family.

Hi Louise,

The time has come for me to admit in the open forum that your book series has become for me a drug that I am dependent on, taking them in slowly, just starting book #4 tonight to get a break from Emily Bronte's hard stuff!.

And I actually buy your books, since I want to have a copy that I will be able to personally pass on to my dear friends in Prague, Czech Republic. One of them just (today!) got a job there with a major international corporation. His interview (in English) was over Skype between Prague and Ireland. He did rather well and attributes his improved language skills to Armand Gamache's style, whom (I suspect) he is trying to imitate at times in real life. Whatever the truth is, I told him that he chose a good example to follow...

I do not care for contests since I never win anything. Your books are great, and the Canadian content is an extra bonus for me, so I mention them regardless to whomever would listen on the ground or in the air when I travel. Nowadays, most of my books come from amazon.ca. I never posted any comments there but I might in the near future. Of course, I also read the comments prior to ordering any book, no matter how sure I am already when going online.

Good luck with A Trick of The Light, and speedy recovery to Michael, he may have already bounced back, do let us know.

I run a home design and lifestyle blog as part of my interior design business. One of the things I love about all of the Gamache books is the real sense of location in all of them. Whether pulling up a plastic chair in Ruth's kitchen, attending a seance in an old Victorian pile or snuggling by the fire with a snack in Olivier and Gabri's bistro, I am there.

I would used my design blog to promote the whole series, especially the new book, to help cosy home lovers really love a cozy mystery in Three Pines. I'll do a post about great B&B's. I'll do a post about vacationing in Montreal. I'll write a post about classic Quebec architecture to help set the mood for your future readers. I've always meant to do a post on crazy wallpaper. I'll make a speculative mood board on how I think the Reine-Marie has decorated the Gamache apartemtn. I'll even fund a giveaway gift card to Tim Horton's for the US release date! If I can find more ideas like these in the new book, I'll run with them!

I can bring a whole new demographic to your party, Louise. It would be pleasure to do for you after all of the fine hours of reading you have given my family.

Want to see my style of blogging and the topics I cover? (I also have growing followings on Facebook and Twitter.) Feel free to browse my blog: www.caro-interiors.com

Thanks for considering me!

You know, Dru Ann Love is an official reviewer that started out only as a fan. On her blog, Dru's Book Musings (http://notesfromme.wordpress.com/), she'd been reviewing books on her own when publishers found her. They now send her books to review for them. She also posts her reviews on a monthly basis on the Cozy Chicks blog.

She would be an excellent recipient of one of your rare ARCs for A TRICK OF THE LIGHT.

She is also a fine human being. :)

Aimee said...

I'd love one myself but I can't really do anything for you getting the word out. Hence my vote for Dru.

Hi Louise: What a great idea for a contest and easy enough to do for your legions of fans. My best at spreading the word will be to tell all my friends, family, colleagues and anyone I meet on vacation. I adore Gamanche and Three Pines. When reading your books I am right there 'like a fly on the wall' until the very end it is wonderful but then to have a sense of loss when ending one of your books because I means I don't know what is happening next to my favourite characters, yikes. So glad to hear of more books on the way. I gave my husband The Brutal Telling to read on an eight hour plane trip home. He isn't a mystery book guy, but now he is at least for your series. So Louise, I am not a techno person, I don't FB, Twitter etc. but word-of-mouth still works for me and hopefully for you as well.

Should I be fortunate enough to be in possession of one of the ARC editions, I will wear it strapped to my person for a solid month everywhere I go so I can read excerpts of it out loud (and with great care to use proper francais inflection) not just to friends but to random strangers at bus stops and cafes, and people in the park. Winnipeg is Canada's Cultural Capital and I attend a lot of public events personally as well as professionally. You want a big mouth, I am your girl!
Thanks for your wonderful storytelling xo Suzanne

If I should be so luck as tto get an ARC, I will review it on my blog whic goes out to my small group of follwers, my library's facebook members and to a link on our website which potentially reaches all of our 14,000 registered patrons. As I usually do, I will also write a review on Barnes & Noble.com and Amazon. Lastly I will lord it over the 30 or so patrons that I have gotten started on your books (but in a nice way, of course!)

I'm going about it differently. I give Still Life as birthday and Christmas gifts. I bought a copy for my friend Janice (May 27) today. Then I tell them that the entire series is excellent and they need to read the books in order. I think it's a kind of multiple marketing.

Happy Birthday to me...I pre-ordered and it is my present to me.

I would love an ARC of your newest book. I don't have the contacts that some of the folks who've already commented, but i do have an extensive FB friend list, along with several email contacts lists.

Everyone with whom I've shared your prior books is hooked.

I'd write reviews for Amazon & B&N, and any other vendor.

Thanks for your consideration!

Well, Louise, I'd be over the moon to get a ARC of A Trick of Light. I miss Chief Inspector Gamache so much, I'm experiencing withdrawal symptoms...
Now, the thing is, I'm not a blogger, I'm not on twitter, I have 'only' 238 friends on facebook. Therefore, all I can offer is to tell everyone (no matter if they listen or not) in Melbourne and wider Australia (where I live at the moment) and back home in Germany (where I'm from) how amazing all of your books are. That includes, of course, writing comments on Amazon and the like.
Thank you for writing such lovely books.

I'm so depressed....I cannot come close to some of these ideas! But what I will do, is continue to use my Nook in between customers at my Antiques Store. Invariably people ask "what are you reading?"....and no matter who I am reading at the time, my answer is always "Louise Penny....have you read any of her books?". By the time they leave they are new fans.

I have enjoyed all of your books and find they are peace-giving after long, heartwrenching days at my job. My mind needs to wander and I have learned that the minds of those I care for every day need to wander as well, into serene places like Three Pines and away from their mindplaces of torment. Over the last 21 years I have worked at two state hospitals, caring for the mentally ill, many of whom make their "homes" there. We have libraries full of older books and cast-off books donated by hospital staff. I have made a habit of donating some of my more beloved books to the library so that these folks can enjoy them, too. I'm not one, usually, to re-read something, no matter how much I enjoyed it. And I am not a keeper of first editions, so though I would cherish one of your ARCs I would sell it and use the proceeds to purchase your full series for the asylum library. Two sets of your series - so that staff and patients could enjoy them. We all need the peace and sense of justice you offer us in Inspector Gamache's world.

Hi Louise! If I'm lucky enough to get an ARC of "A Trick of the Light", not only will I post the wonderful news on Facebook, but, I'll also tell:

* My online book club
* All my friends and family - most are readers and have already devoured your previous books
* My face-to-face book club that I'm starting this summer

And I promise to post a review on Amazon.com on the pre-order notice.

Thank you for the opportunity!

Dear Louise - Since I cashier at our weekly book sale at the library I often tell people about books I've read - (As my daughter says - I hand sell -) I will also post on Facebook, and send out to all my email buddies. But mostly I'll just tell everyone I know that the wonderful Louise Penny has written another winner!

I already feel that "A Trick of the Light" is a special birthday present (being published on my 60th birthday, this August 30th), but a copy of the ARC would be an early birthday cake! I can't really match all of the above fans for gregariousness and social connections, but I would be more than happy to do my utmost word-of-mouth proselytizing at the Printer's Row LitFest (downtown Chicago, June 4-5, the Midwest's largest free outdoor book fair!) to make the 125,000+ attendees think they are really at the Louise Penny LoveFest! :-)

Obsequiously yours,

I recently discovered your books and had to buy all of them. If I get an advance copy I will do what I have been doing -- spreading the word about this wonderful read. I have e-mailed anyone and everyone I know to let them know of your wonderful mysteries. I have developed a "check out" library with my sisters so I can get the books back as I don't want to part with them. Good stuff!

Sandra W. from Trumbull said...

I'll post it on FB and goodreads and tell my friends but then you knew I would do that didn't you;) Since I already preordered it from Barnes and Noble it probably should go to someone else UNLESS it was signed by you!!!! Then it should go to me to join its friends in my collection of signed Louise Penny books (you were so kind at the Raul Julia book signing!) And then I will gift my book to one of my friends, book club members (both book clubs) and goodreads buddies who I have already enlightened about your writing - maybe I'll just do my own contest to see who deserves it!!!!! Or I could score some brownie points with my daughter in law and send it to her.

I would LOVE to get an ARC! I adore your books and consistently give Still Life to people as a gift. Most people like it so much they read the rest of the books in the series.

I hope I win!

Dear Louise,

It is so difficult to wait for A Trick of the Light... and then for your next Three Pines novel after that. But we must wait, and the waiting makes us even more appreciative. Having said that, perhaps I should not enter this contest? Whether or not I am selected for a precious ARC, I will continue to cybervangelize your Three Pines novels on Facebook and Flickr (we Flicker-ers often share literary treasures in our own photostreams and among our comments on the streams of others... such as this comment by Flicker-er Eglantine to me: http://www.flickr.com/photos/conceptvessel/5658105434/ ~ scroll down).

Thank you for this opportunity, and especially for the depth, complexity, and humanity of your writing.

As everybody else, I can blog it and post it and tell all my friends about it, but I can also tell all the students at George Mason University that they cannot graduate without having read at least three of your books.

But, best of all, if I were rich,I would hire a plane with a banner flowing at its tail telling the whole world abut you and your books as it circles the Earth...

Louise, you've chatted with my book group, Book Bunch at Book Chat Central on yuku several times for the past books. We are all huge fans. If I am lucky enough to win this ARC not only will I share it with my fellow group members and post a review on the club site as well as library thing and Facebook but I will also so something very special in honor of the founder of Book Bunch. The late Jill Lasker left us this time last year, she was your biggest fan and we carry on in her honor. I would love to donate a copy of A Trick of Light to my local library in her honor. In fact I think I will do that regardless of winning! Jill is snoopy dancing with us always.

I wish I could come up with a super creative way to spread the word but the best I can come up with is to tell five people every day about the Inspector Gamache series for the next year. I probably already do that anyway! :)

I'm very much looking foward to reading it whenever I can get my hands on a copy!

I will post a review in the office, tweet it for a month, and my book group will read it aloud. All ARC's and donated books are then taken to South County Convalescent Care where they are shared and read to those who can no longer read.

And win or lose, you're guaranteed two sales here - one for me, one for my sister, which we, in turn, pass down to the next generation. And so on, and so on. . . we get our monies worth out of a book.

Thank you. Keep writing! Cancer patients depend on Three Pines for escape.

I'll do what I've already been doing---talking you up on my blog, buying copies of your books for my friends (if I give Still Life as a gift, they'll get hooked and buy the rest...**evil cackle**), and vote for you in the Anthony Awards (again). Also, I'll probably screech loud enough that I don't have to tell my (nearly) 500 Facebook friends about it. But I'll tell them anyway, and then hoard the ARC so everyone else has to buy.

So looking forward to every book you write.

I am a reference librarian with my collection developer's ear -- not only will I make sure she buys the book for our library, I also tell all my patrons to try your book. Many of us read mysteries here and people are always asking us for the best authors. We tell them, you must try Louise Penny! Now, I realize that library books are free, but I PROMISE you that I (and many others) BUY the authors we test drive from the library. I've purchased 2 of your books for myself and will certainly buy this new one. Pick me! :):) Thanks so much.

Dear Louise,

I won't win if I answer truthfully... But I'll be honest nonetheless. If i were to get an ARC, i would be selfish and thinking about my own pleasure first. I would call in sick and spend the day reading on my favourite sofa in the sun room, with my cat on my lap, pausing once in a while to look at the sun and the blooming pear tree and the tulips outside. I would relish every single page. And i would be grateful for the way your stories never fail to make me feel: happy and content and convinced that there is always hope.

It's only once the last page would have been read, and the book closed for good, that i would start telling everyone about it.

Laura (in PA) said...

I already tell everyone I know, and many I don't, to read your books. If I win, I will post it on Facebook, share it on all my favorite logs, demand that all eight of my siblings read it, buy a copy for my Mom, and even buy my own copy to keep my ARC company. :)

Oh my goodness, if I get an advance copy of A Trick of the Light, you can bet that everyone I know will know, and I know a lot of people. I will make sure that my local library (with 5 branches within the county), have more than just one copy each....I'll even donate them myself if necessary. Everyone of my Facebook friends, and my e-mail friends will know about the new book. I will also contact Barnes and Noble personally and ask why they have not put up the book on pre-order status for the Nook, which I have. That's an important one! I work in retail as a retirement job, and there are a lot of employees at the two stores where I work. I will definitely get the word out everywhere. I have some connections with the local paper and will make sure an article gets written about the book.
That should do it, I think.

I always encourage others to read the Three Pines series; it's become a habit with me. I don't have a blog and I don't Tweet but I am setting off on a two month journey around and across Canada and the USA at the end of May. I plan on riding trains, buses and catching planes. I am staying in hostels, hotels and B and Bs and perhaps a night or two on a warm beach. For my journey I need a good book, and if I receive the ARC, I will be seen reading it from Vancouver to Gander, from Montreal to NYC, from New Orleans to San Francisco and at hundreds of stops between. I am really looking forward to reading, and being seen reading, a Trick of the Light whether it's gifted to me or I have to buy it. Thank you, Louise, for all of these wonderful stories.

While I'd like an ARC and, while I commented favorably about Bury Your Dead on my Book Review Blog, and while I expect to rave about this one as well, and while my review of Bury Your Dead is my second most commonly read post. You know I'll be reading A Trick of The Light One Way or the Other. Sooner is better for me. But I want you to do what is best for Trick of the Light because the more exposure it gets the better for ALL of us!

I told my friend who recommended your series last year that the bar is now raised for what mystery series I read as yours are so well written! I rarely reread books but know I will yours.
I already recommend your charming and intriquing stories of Three Pines to everyone I talk to about books (which is most people as I am an avid reader) - even my husband is reading and enjoying them. If I would be lucky enough to win an ARC of Trick of Light, I would assign it to my developmental reading class at the community college where I teach. I would use it to illustrate to students the joy of reading, the comfort of caring well defined characters and the gentle goodness of a story well told.

I Love Books...and Three Pines is one of my favorites. I am a chit-chatty person and word of mouth goes a long way..even if you don't give me a copy, i will still go out and buy me one, and tell people about an awesome Three Pines series.. One of my friends was moving to minnasota(march) and i told her to make sure she takes of her shoes before she goes in someones house. she asked me why so i told her, about reading it in your books. when she went to meet the realators to tour houses don't you know, they told her the same thang.. I Love Your Books please don't stop. kaykaly@msn.com

Hi I work for a community college and a coworker gave me The Brutal Telling to read. We are all hooked. I have made a request to have the Brutal Telling as one of our novel studies for our English course. I love the diversity of your characters and how they interact with each other. I want to spread the Three Pine series to my students, coworkers, and all my facebook friends. Thanks for writing these books. Only a few books can make a reader want to spend each spare moment reading...needing to read just one more page. Your books do this. Thanks again.

I am the most loquacious fan of Armande Gamache and the wonderful friends I have in Trois Pins. Just this past Saturday I converted yet another follower! A new visitor to our book club said that she most enjoys mysteries. I gasped and began my litany about the wonderful citizens of Trois Pins and the Surete du Quebec. She bought Still LIfe right then and there—it had to be ordered, so I assured her she'll love it when she gets the chance to read it. She's my third convert—and Louise Penny customer—from that book club alone, and one of many people who have listened to my litany and fell in love with Louise Penny's wonderful world in her books. Whether I get the delicious chance to read this ARC or not, I will remain the biggest fan of Armande Gamache and Three Pines for as long as I'm able to read a book or listen to an audio. You must continue to write—we're the same age, Louise, so I think that will work out well! Marcia LOUISE Teter

If I won an ARC I would run in to the future Louise Penny readers of America - my daughters - and squeal and scream with delight that I finally won something worthwhile. Then I would recommend it to my many different yahoo groups and especially to my Book Club and to my on-line friends who have book clubs. I would post my victorious win on my blog and recommend it to my friend the head librarian, who is often asked for recommendations for a new mystery series to read! Then when I got it I would cuddle it happily a moment, then devour it in two evenings!

Hi over there, I´m one of your dedicated readers in Germany and I´m really looking forward to reading the new one and telling everybody here about the new adventures of Gamache and his "crowd". I´m already spreading the word about your wonderful three pines mysteries, which are such a wonderful mixture of modern crime fiction and classical setting in an isolated town with only so many suspects but wonderfully painted characters. So please send a copy to germany. :-)

My plan if I should be lucky enough to win a copy would be to read it everywhere - shopping mall, train to Montreal, Bus to the train, stoplights grocery shopping (waiting at the checkout - I would, of course, pick the longest line, at the bank (again longest line)and Dr.'s office. And, any other place I go.

ALWAYS holding it up so that the cover can be seen and striking up a conversation if I see anyone so much as glancing at the cover.

Hi Louise: I will talk about it on my blog - murderimpossible.blogspot.com - bring it to the Library discussion group - share with friends on Amazon.com and send it with my husband on his journeys.

Love the glimpse of the laptop, too bad the book is covering the draft (sigh).

Louise, I am the head librarian in Michigan at THREE branch libraries (thank you budget cuts.) While I am already promoting all of your books to our patrons, I vow to step it up a notch. I am going to display your books (and books on CD) at the front entrance of the Carl Sandburg Branch, along with information about you and your accolades. At the Noble Branch the display will be near the new books and also at the Vest Pocket (in the Senior Center). And of course you are always on my Facebook page (and perhaps I can get you on the library Facebook.) Thanks for your consideration!

I entered the first contest but I honestly do not want a copy on these terms. Why not? One, I hate all the fake reviewers on Amazon who get advance copies and love everything they read (so please do not give it to those readers who will get advance copies anyway). Of course I will love your book, but a stranger will not distinguish me from "the plants.". Two, I will be unable to talk about it with my nearest and dearest, whom I introduced to your series. I will not be able to contain myself! I will die of guilt.
Three, to get new readers you need a visual...and you will get that with Gamache on film. To get new readers now, I would get the company that makes those liquorice pipes to do a joint promo! If I cannot have a vat of hot chocolate, a pastry, a fire, or even Michael sitting in my living room while I read, then at least I can have the pipe. Unfortunately, (or not), you are not a new author, and those of us who read blogs or book websites already know you. Promotions that are more personal, in bookstores like the mystery ones or stores in vacation destinations like Martha' Vineyard, Nantucket, where an international audience comes for leisure and no thought of price, or ski resorts winter or summer...wish I could carry your books around the world...but my last piece of advice is use Facebook but get creative...get some to look at Facebook Studio...make a YouTube video that will go viral ( no, you do not have to sing)...in the end we will all pay full price because your books are special...and worth the wait.

Hmm, let's see.

I could:

* carry it with me everywhere in New York (8,000,0000 people in the "naked city")

* put it on my book page (which promotes REAL books).

* I could make a separate page just for your books (ooh, might do that anyway)

* shamelessly steal my friend Courtney's idea and donate one in honor of Jill from book bunch

* tell everyone on book bunch to buy a copy (well, OK, they will probably do that anyway)

Don't worry about the sales, Louise, you have a "tribe" of fans.

(I have a confession, actually. When you were in NY, I had a fleeting (!) thought of going downtown to your hotel to say hi. Then I realized, that's not fandom, that's stalking!). Eep!

A little scary, but on the other hand, it's a sign that your readers feel they really know you and connect with you.

Louise, what a generous offer!!

I haven't read all of the comments yet, but I now know that I am not nearly as well-connected as many of those who wrote to you.

However, even though I will not make that special stack of comments to be chosen from randomly, I will still tell everyone I know about Trick of Light and all of the Gamache novels as they are dear to my heart - they are my favorite books. And thanks to those who have commented before me for all of the wonderful ideas of how to promote them.

I wish you every possible success, and hope to meet you in person come September in Michigan. . . I'll be the blubbering goof who is awestruck in your presence (this description ensures anonymity as I imagine there will be many of us) :^)

Louise--

I've been a huge fan of Three Pines for quite some time and would be thrilled and honored to have an advance copy of the new book. Honestly, I don't have a blog, but as a librarian, I do come in contact with dozens of readers every day. Already much of the staff of our library are avid readers of your books and we all anxiously await the next book (and compete to be the first on the reserve list!).

So, I suppose I'm not wanting this ARC just for myself, but for several co-workers as well. We all are quick to recommend your books to someone looking for a good mystery or even just a good book to read. It's always a joy to place Still Life in someone's hands and know that they will be immediately hooked on Gamache and all of the folks in Three Pines. The best part is that all of us can not only tell them that Still Life is fabulous, but that each book in the series is better than the last. We will not rest until every reader in Clark County, Ohio has at least given your books a try!

Anneinaz said...

I will read the book and after I love it, I will lend it, inspiring others to buy it, and the rest of the series. I will be reading it in public so people will ask about the intriguing title. I will post on Facebook where I surround myself with people who read. I will post my positive comments on Goodreads so that unlimited folks can read them. I will recommend, as I have so often, this wonderful book to anyone who asks. IF I am not lucky enough to win an advance copy, I will watch with bated breath for the release date, and be there, cash in hand to obtain my personal copy. Either way, I'm in.

If I were to win this coveted ARC, I would tell everyone I know, and everyone I encounter that I ddon't know, what a marvelous lot of books you have written. Actually, I already do that, so i will have to hire a billboard and post the message there.

I will read it, twice. And I will share it with my wife and my kids. I will continue telling anyone who is even mildly interesting what a great writer you are. And I will smile a lot.

Louise,

I am stuck in the "old world" and refuse to join the social networking world. I much prefer personally interaction with people. That said, I will (and do) recommend your books to random strangers in the mystery aisles of the bookstores, to my fellow bookclub members (to whom you have graciously donated your time to talk with) - and they in turn to their friends, and not least of all, my co-workers at Johns Hopkins University Press, who I hope will mention to their editors of journals, magazines and conference colleagues.

But most of all, I just want to say good luck to you on another great book launch and a huge thank you from us, your fans, who are blessed to read your words.

Best,
Kristopher

Wow! Stiff competition here. I have a blog http://freedomacres.blogspot.com with a good following (although only 20 confirmed followers) on which I would review it and also copy it onto FB. I would do my best to publicize A Trick of the Light, as I did a book called Deep Creek by friends of mine.

I just finished "The Murder Stone" in german. As I told you on FB I loved it! It would be so gorgeous to get one of the copies of "A trick of the light". I don't have thousands of friends on Facebook, not even hundreds, but I have lots of real life friends who enjoy reading. Many of my friends are in other countries, and when I enjoy a book by a Canadian author I am sure to tell them about it. My cousin in Texas has introduced her reading group to Three Pines as has my old school friend in Wales. In August some friends from New Zealand are visiting us and since I know they enjoy mysteries I will pass on a couple of your books. If I was lucky enough to win an ARC, I would invite them to read it during their visit, but I don't think I would part with the precious copy. I would however lend it to my two daughters-in-law who are great fans. I am happy that they both share my admiration for your books.

I brought in the first book of your's I'd read and told them about how I bought it in Victoria, BC and how it reminded me so much of my vacation the previous year in Quebec, and Inspector Gamache was another Inspector Poirot. There was a rush to grab the book, and then the others began writing down the name so they could find it too. We live in San Diego, CA, and you have a bunch of new fans.

If I'm lucky enough to win an advanced copy, you can bet your bottom dollar I'll promote it to the skies on Bookoholics, where you have many fans and where many readers who had not been familiar with you are NOW fans.

I'll also continue to wax eloquent about your books, as I already do to even perfect strangers.

And, the frosting on the cake would be that I'd get to read the book quicker than if I bought it. And oh yeah, I already have it pre-ordered. So I'd send that copy to my daughter.

Finally, I love your books. Please pick me as an advanced reader!

I will hit VERMONT hard - I know librarians, radio types and a lot of people from the arts community that I can share with. Ross Sneyd at VPR was best man at my wedding. I will talk to Mark Johnson who has a highly rated interview show on WDEV. OK, Vermont is not a huge market, but 25% of us come from French Canadian stock, and, um, many of us read, and we even know how to get to the Townships (just go up to Franklin and keep going!)

Thanks for the chance at the ARC!

Now you've done it, Louise! Look at all this work you've made for yourself and Michael! I am not "connected", but as a librarian I have the opportunity to point people in your direction and over the years everyone I've handed Still Life to has become a fan, and we're all waiting patiently (some less so than others, I have to say) for A Trick of the Light. My pre-orders for the book and audio are in place, and if I was blessed with an ARC, I would be compelled to auction it off as a fundraiser for my library. Maybe I'd add a copy of Still Life, because that's where it all begins. Best of everything to you!

If I received an ARC of a Trick of the Light, as well as posting on FB about how wonderful it is, as have been all of the other Inspector Gamache novels, I would harass my friends who are serial book-readers (and borrowers) and let them know this is a keeper, and they should hurry up and get their own Louise Penny collection underway. Also, as I am in the lucky position of working in a university and talking with people from all over the world, I would be really happy to tell them about the world of Three Pines and how elegant the novels are - crime and good detection are so satisfying and engaging and, in the world of Inspector Gamache, you know even though there is horror and evil, good will prevail.

Dear Louise I have worked as a nurse in Orillia Ontario for 35 years. I am an avid reader and have fallen quite in love with your village and the people there. Clara is my favorite-she feels like a friend and I love Armand and his wife and his high ideals. I have told a number of my patients and staff as well about your Three Pines books-written the titles and your name down for them. Some people are from New Liskard and North Bay which is right on the Quebec border so they like the French Canadian component and little French phrases throughout the books. I can hardly wait for your new book. I want to know the whole story behind what happened to Paul Moran. I asked several people whom I lent or recommended the last book to and they all told me that I had to wait patiently for the next one. So here I am waiting patiently. I am so happy to even be able to tell you this Louise.

Hi Louise and Michael,

First, let me say that I absolutely ADORE your books! I've read the entire Gamache series (including "The Hangman") and have tweeted, Facebook posted and commented about to my newsletter list of over 3000 about how great they are.

Congratulations!

I'm a "Gamache" by marriage and originally found your books when doing some research on my father-in-law for an awards presentation. Since then, I've been hooked, avidly awaiting the next novel.

If chosen (and even if not, being chosen will simply allow me to do it much sooner), I'll promote your book to my Facebook friends and fans, my newsletter list, my international client base and my Twitter following -- in addition to reviewing on Amazon and my blog (with a 20,000+ readership).

Congratulations on your success and thank you for bringing Inspector Gamache and his "family" to us all.

Hello Louise,

My plans for "marketing" your book are very low tech - no Twittering, Facebooking, blogging, etc. I have created a short poem which I will recite to any and all who may be interested.

A Trick of the Light, A Trick of the Light
Buy it today, don’t wait until night
Don’t be left out, nor be left behind
Be one of the clever, intelligent kind.
Go to your bookstore, find it online
There’s no way on earth I am giving up mine!
It’s Louise Penny’s latest, an obvious smash
Adventurous times with Inspector Gamache
Like all of her others, I know it’s a hit
(“And how do I know?” you ask in a snit)
Cuz I wrote a poem in a contest she had
Won an advanced reader copy and “Wow” was I glad.

Thanks for the opportunity,

If I was fortunate enough to win the ARC being offered, I would read it first, and then I would share it with all of our TLs at our annual dinner, and then do a draw, to pass it on to another "winner".

I would update my "status" on various online communities to "Reading Louise Penny's newest novel, the latest in the fabulous Three Pines series". I'd contact my good friend, a university librarian who is both the head of her librarian's society and an active blogger, and ask her to spread the word of the incredible book on the verge of being released. I would add a new signature to my e-mails, telling all recipients that I'm reading A Trick of LIght and loving it, and inviting them to pick up the series.

So, I'd be busy online, but really, I think I'd have a larger influence in the real world. I am one of those readers who reads everywhere. At stop lights. While I'm pumping gas. In line at the Post Office. I read, I turn to the other people in line and proselyte. I share passages. And I'm convincing! My sincerity and passion for what I read comes across as something other than wacky, and people tend to write down my recommendations and talk to me later about having read something I've shared.

Having the chance to do this with A Trick of the Light will be a privilege. I'll certainly do it once it is published, and I'd be ecstatic to do so with an ARC.
